James was born February 16, 1960, the only child of wizards Gerald and Dora Potter. His incredibly wealthy parents doted on their son, having had him late in their lives. He grew up in the English countryside right outside Oxford, where he spent many long days roughhousing outside with the other well-to-do boys in the town. In the evenings, he and his father would read together in the den every night before returning to bed, a ritual that James kept up for many years even when he returned home from Hogwarts. His acceptance letter to Hogwarts was neither unexpected or highly-anticipated, but as the beginning of his first year drew closer, James became more and more excited to learn about his off-limits magical powers. Although it is unlikely that he will ever admit it, James was nervous the first time he set foot on the Hogwarts Express, but thankfully fell into the company of none other than Sirius Black – his first, and best, friend at the school. The pair were nearly inseparable during their first few years of schooling, constantly concocting pranks and schemes to unleash on the student body. The two were also quite close with fellow Gryffindors Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew; the four became such a tight contingent that they were seen almost as a singular unit. There was no question about James' sorting into Gryffindor, and the Sorting Hat only took a few moments to decide where to place him. During his second year, James tried out for the quidditch team unsuccessfully, which only strengthened his resolve to make the cut. Finally, the next year he tried out again and was brought onto the squad as a first-string chaser. Additionally, his first year, James took notice of a red-haired girl in his house who was as successful in her studies as he was. Initially he saw Lily Evans as a threat, but the intensity of his animosity became a heavy crush – and as he grew older, he was unable to rid himself of it. Although his attempts to win her affections have been hopeless, he still figures that if he can win the hearts of other ladies, then Lily will eventually fall to his charms too. Of course, since his first year, James's academic determination and integrity slipped miserably. While his mind is still sharp, the boy now only is known for cutting corners on almost all his assignments.

James has always been brilliant, from the time he was young. When attending family dinners, he would always blindside his relatives with arbitrary facts and well-thought out statements for a child of his age. His liberal parents always taught James to pursue his own interests and to maintain his intellectual independence: it was important to understand the world around him and to enjoy himself at the same time. These lessons stayed with James during his years at Hogwarts, where he has always succeeded in his studies, to some degree. He knows how to work hard and play hard, but lost his determination as he got older. Now he cuts corners on almost all his assignments to just get them in on time. Over the years, James has become increasingly cocky, a trait of his that surfaced after realizing that he was more intelligent than many of his peers. His cockiness tends to translate itself into arrogance and social cruelty, and the boy has a poor habit of considering he and his friends as being "better" than, well, most other people. His boldness and brazen attitude can be seen as being worthy of respect – or just completely off-putting. Mostly thanks to the influence of his best friend and constant companion Sirius Black, James is willing to pull off almost any prank, no matter how daring or improbable or what the consequences are. Additionally, since he never had to learn the value of a sickle, James is usually careless with the location of many of his material possessions.

Although thin and a bit lanky, James appears fit enough to hold his own on the quidditch pitch. He is tall and imposing, with smooth, straight black hair and expressive hazel eyes framed by his square, wire glasses. Although his hair is always a bit untidy and subject to hours of bedhead in the mornings, James will still run his hands through his hair to maintain a nonchalant, "windswept" look. He has a thin nose with an even slope that matches his thin, pale pink lips. James' eyebrows never seem overgrown, and he keeps himself well-manicured overall; the one exception being his chewed-down nails. His pale complexion is fairly smooth, but a little shiny and subject to allowing a pimple or two to erupt every once in a while. His imperfect skin and supposedly prominent Adam's apple make James self-conscious when he becomes aware of these physical aspects, but they're nothing he frets over.
